A 30-year-old ex-convict has been arrested after residents of Djomoa in the Upper Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region allegedly caught him with livestock suspected to have been stolen.
The suspect, identified as Kofi Daniel, also known as Okorley, was reportedly apprehended by vigilant residents after he was found in possession of three goats and a sheep.
According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect was questioned by residents after they noticed him transporting the animals. When asked where he was taking the livestock, he allegedly told them that he was on his way to a market to sell them.
However, his explanation reportedly changed during the questioning. He later claimed that he was transporting the animals to a man identified as Musa in Sawa, a neighbouring community.
The conflicting explanations reportedly raised suspicion among the residents, who decided to verify the information rather than allow the suspect to continue on his way.
The residents reportedly obtained the contact details of the person identified as Musa and attempted to establish whether he was expecting the livestock.
Faced with further questioning, the suspect allegedly admitted that he had stolen the animals.
Following the admission, residents handed him over to the Asesewa District Police Command for further investigation.
The Police are expected to work to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft and identify the rightful owners of the recovered livestock.
The case has also drawn attention to concerns about livestock theft in communities, where the loss of goats, sheep, cattle and other animals can have a significant financial impact on farmers and livestock owners.
