The Vice Chairman of the Bawumia Campaign Team, Nana Akomea, has sharply criticised Alan Kyerematen over his comments directed at former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Alan Kyerematen had criticised Kufuor for endorsing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential candidacy and urging Ghanaians to vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer in the December polls.
Speaking during an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, Nana Akomea expressed disappointment with Alan Kyerematen for attacking Kufuor’s character, particularly after the opportunities Alan enjoyed under Kufuor’s administration.
According to Nana Akomea, Alan has no basis to expect an endorsement from Kufuor, especially after severing ties with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“I am hurt about Alan’s issue because everybody in the NPP, including Alan himself and President Akufo-Addo, is under Kufuor’s leadership. At a point, the entire country was under Kufuor, who is regarded as the wise leader.
“If the party has elected Bawumia as the candidate, how can the leader speak against the party’s decision when he himself also voted? If Alan was elected by the party to lead, do you think Kufuor can come and say he prefers and endorses Cheddar? Is that possible?” he said.
Nana Akomea further highlighted that Alan benefitted significantly from government appointments during Kufuor’s administration.
“So Alan expects Kufuor to endorse him when he is not a member of the party? President Kufuor appointed Alan as an ambassador, and at that time, there were other qualified persons in the party who could have executed the job. He also appointed him [Alan] as the Minister for Trade and Industry, even though he could have appointed other individuals to the role.”
He continued, “You are complaining because Kufuor has supported a candidate elected by the party. Who are you expecting him to support? I can’t fathom his statement. You turned your back on the party, so you expect Kufuor to do the same?”
Background
Alan Kyerematen, the Presidential Candidate for the Movement for Change, criticised former President John Agyekum Kufuor for praising Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and endorsing his candidacy.
In a widely shared video, Alan Kyerematen expressed disappointment in his former boss, ex-President Kufuor, leaving his interviewer visibly shocked.
“President Kufuor is an old man; I take him as my uncle. I don’t want to attack him in public. But what he has done has created a big blot on his political career. You see how people are attacking him now? Someone who has had a distinguished political career and is widely respected—how come he is now meddling in such matters, allowing people to attack him in this manner?
“He is my uncle, but what he is doing is not right. He should put a stop to that. If you are an elderly person and are being advised against doing something wrong, you must heed the advice and stop,” Alan said.
