According to a report by Ebenezer Madugu, the suspect was reportedly riding pillion on a motorbike when he allegedly targeted a person in the area and attempted to snatch the individual’s phone.
Eyewitnesses reportedly said the suspected robbery did not go as planned after the alleged victim managed to resist the attempt.
The suspect is said to have missed his target, prompting the alleged victim to push him off the motorbike.
The incident quickly attracted the attention of people in the area, with residents reportedly rushing to the scene after becoming aware of what had happened.
According to eyewitness accounts, the residents surrounded the suspect and began attacking him before the situation could escalate further.
Some motorists who were passing through the area reportedly stopped after seeing the commotion and allegedly joined the residents in confronting the suspect.
The incident is said to have created a chaotic scene around the area near the A&C Mall as residents attempted to apprehend the alleged phone snatcher.
Cases of phone snatching and other forms of street robbery have raised concerns among residents and road users in parts of Accra. Criminals allegedly target pedestrians and motorists, sometimes using motorcycles to make quick getaways after snatching valuables.
The latest incident has also reignited discussions about the dangers of mob attacks. While residents may become angry when they believe a person has committed a crime, suspects are entitled to due process, and matters of alleged criminal conduct are expected to be handled by the appropriate authorities.
It was not immediately clear whether the suspect was subsequently handed over to the police or whether authorities had formally confirmed the incident.
The identity of the suspect and the alleged victim was also not immediately available.
The circumstances surrounding the reported incident remain subject to further investigation, and the allegations against the suspect would need to be established through the appropriate legal process.
The incident nevertheless highlights the tension that can arise when alleged street crimes occur in busy communities and residents intervene before law enforcement officers arrive.
Authorities continue to encourage members of the public to report suspected criminal activity to the police rather than taking the law into their own hands.
Further details are expected to emerge as investigations into the reported incident continue.
