Two persons have been arrested after the Tema Regional Police Command intercepted 692 parcels of a substance suspected to be Indian hemp during a snap-check operation at Dawhenya in the Prampram Division.
The suspects have been identified as Godwin Asigeh and Freeman Amedoku. They were arrested in the early hours of Tuesday, September 8, 2026, after police officers stopped an Accra-bound Ford Transit vehicle at about 12:45 a.m.
According to the police, the vehicle, with registration number GT 6140-22, was being driven by Asigeh, while Amedoku was travelling with him as his assistant.
The interception formed part of a snap-check exercise conducted by personnel from the Prampram Division as officers carried out checks on vehicles travelling through the area.
A subsequent search of the Ford Transit reportedly led to the discovery of parcels containing a substance suspected to be Indian hemp. The packages were reportedly wrapped in yellow polythene bags.
The suspects, together with the vehicle and the suspected narcotic substance, were subsequently taken to the Devtraco Police Station for further investigation.
Police later counted the seized parcels in the presence of the two suspects and recorded a total of 692 pieces. The suspected substance was retained as an exhibit, while the Ford Transit was impounded by the police.
The two suspects also provided caution statements as part of the ongoing investigation, while statements were obtained from officers involved in the arrest.
Police are investigating the case as suspected possession of narcotic substances under Section 37 of the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019).
The authorities have not disclosed where the suspected substance was allegedly loaded or its intended final destination. Police have only confirmed that the vehicle was travelling towards Accra when it was intercepted at the Dawhenya checkpoint.
Both suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue. The police have not indicated that the men have been convicted of any offence, and the suspected substance remains subject to the ongoing investigative and legal process.
The Tema Regional Police Command has commended the officers who carried out the operation and reaffirmed its commitment to preventing the transportation and distribution of suspected narcotic substances within the region.
The seizure adds to ongoing police efforts to intercept suspected narcotic consignments being transported through communities within the Tema and Greater Accra areas.
Further developments are expected as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the consignment and the involvement of the two suspects.
