A police situation report has provided fresh details about the violent incident that occurred in New Winneba in the Effutu Municipality of Ghana’s Central Region, leaving three people dead and several others injured.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when a group of about 300 people reportedly entered the New Winneba Township at about 10:40 a.m.
According to the police report, the group was made up of people from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze. The group allegedly entered the township and attacked residents, shops, stores and private residences.
The police report stated that the group was carrying various weapons and other objects during the confrontation. The situation subsequently escalated into violence, resulting in injuries, deaths and extensive damage to property.
The Effutu North District Police Headquarters was also reportedly targeted during the unrest.
The police said about 15 injured victims were transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical treatment. A police officer was among those injured.
Three people were later confirmed dead following the violence. The identities of the deceased had not been officially released at the time of the reports.
The Central Regional Police Command subsequently deployed personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols to the affected area in an effort to restore calm and prevent the situation from escalating further.
Additional reinforcement was also deployed from the Police National Headquarters. Two armoured vehicles were sent to support the security operation and strengthen the police presence in the area.
The violence is believed to have occurred against the backdrop of tensions involving land ownership in the New Winneba area. However, the police have not yet officially established the exact circumstances that triggered the confrontation, saying investigations are ongoing.
Earlier reports indicated that the situation had become tense after disagreements involving people from Gomoa communities and residents of New Winneba. There were also reports of gunfire during the confrontation.
Gomoa Central Member of Parliament Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, was also reportedly confronted by angry residents after visiting the area to obtain information about the incident.
The police have since indicated that the situation in New Winneba has been brought under control, although security personnel remain deployed in the area.
Authorities are expected to provide further information as investigations continue, including details about the circumstances surrounding the deaths, the extent of the property damage and those responsible for the violence.
The incident has renewed concerns about tensions surrounding land ownership and disputes in parts of the Central Region, with residents and authorities expected to work together to prevent further clashes.
