Fort Groot-Freidrichburg (also known as Fort Holland) was built by the Germans in 1683, and designed like a farmyard but by the time Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s founder and first president was around, he loved the place so much, it became one of his favourite hideout spots.
Upon a visit to the fort, which is located in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region, Goshers, a popular video content creator, narrated the stories of the fort – one of four built by the Germans when they came to the Gold Coast.
Confessing that it is, perhaps, the most well-kept ancient fort from colonial days in Ghana, Goshers told the story of how Nkrumah always loved to frequent this place.
He also explained that the place eventually became a usual hideout for Nkrumah, where he had a dedicated parking spot.
“This is a fort that was a delight to Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. This fort used to be his hideout and anything he cam here, he would just come and park his car here and he would just go in there and go and meditate and all that.
“So, Nkrumah has slept in this fort before,” he explained.
Goshers also told the story of a well at the fort that is well over 300 years.
