Savelegu School of Deaf faces infrastructural challenges

The Savelugu School for the Deaf in the Savelugu Municipality of the Northern Region is facing infrastructural challenges, that are affecting academic work.

The situation, therefore, needs urgent attention and governmental support for improved conditions.

Madam Gertrude Gera Dasah, the Headmistress of the school told the Ghana News agency that there was no science laboratory for experiments and that the challenges made teaching and learning ineffective due to lack of other teaching and learning materials.

She said although the school had a computer laboratory with only five functional computers, they were inadequate for the student population.

She noted that the student population stood at 450 and that each dormitory which was supposed to accommodate 15 now accommodated 30 in one dormitory with their belongings competing for space.

Madam Dasah expressed concern about the dilapidated nature of the classrooms and the staff quarters and appealed for support to renovate them to enhance teaching and learning.

She explained that the school’s six staff quarters were not fit for habitation saying, “They are always leaking when it rains and that is why we need urgent support to refurbish them”.

She said another area that needed expansion and refurbishment was the dining hall, which was too small due to the huge number of the students.
