Portable Remanded in Prison Over Alleged Assault and Car Theft

Nigerian musician Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has been remanded in prison following his arraignment before a Federal High Court in Ota, Ogun State on allegations of assault and car theft.

Portable faces a nine-count charge filed by the Ogun State Police Command, which includes accusations of assault, theft, resisting arrest, and causing bodily harm. The charges reportedly stem from an incident that occurred at his bar in the Iyana Ilogbo area on New Year’s Day, involving his estranged partner, Ashabi Simple, and other individuals present at the venue.

The prosecution claims that during the incident, Portable allegedly attacked Ashabi and others, including police officers who were called to the scene. Among the alleged victims are Ileyemi Damilola, Akinyanju Oluwabusayomi, Olowu Olumide, Demilade Ogunniyi, and Ebuka Odah.

Authorities further allege that Portable stole a Mercedes-Benz E300 valued at approximately ₦12 million, reportedly linked to a car dealership named Wally Dex Auto. In addition, police say he assaulted a female officer, Inspector Ogungbe Olayemi, while she was performing her official duties.

During the court proceedings, two siblings of Ashabi testified for the prosecution, although Ashabi herself did not appear in court. Portable’s legal team requested bail, but the presiding judge denied the application, stating that the officer allegedly assaulted must be present before any decision on bail could be made. Portable was consequently remanded in custody, with the next bail hearing scheduled for January 19.

Following the hearing, a video showing Portable being transported to prison went viral on social media, sparking discussions among fans, critics, and members of the public. The footage has drawn widespread attention and renewed scrutiny of the musician’s legal challenges.

This case adds to a series of legal issues Portable has faced over the years. The singer, known for his energetic performances and controversial public persona, has previously been involved in various altercations and run-ins with the law. Law enforcement officials have emphasized that the current allegations are serious, and that due process will be followed to ensure justice.

Supporters of the artist continue to watch developments closely, while critics argue that the case reflects ongoing concerns about accountability and adherence to the law. As the next court hearing approaches, all eyes remain on the Federal High Court in Ota for further updates regarding Portable’s bail application and the ongoing investigation.

The Ogun State Police have reiterated their commitment to upholding the law and protecting citizens, stressing that no individual is above the legal process, regardless of public status or fame.
