Owusu Sekeyere: Former Liberty Professionals midfielder now homeless and battling addiction

Former Liberty Professionals midfielder Owusu Sekeyere, popularly known in his playing days as ‘Sako’, is currently destitute and living on the streets.

Once regarded as a promising talent, Sekeyere’s football career was abruptly cut short by a mysterious injury that remains unresolved, even years after retirement.

In a heartbreaking interview with @owusujerryelvis on TikTok, Sako revealed that his biggest struggle now is his cocaine addiction.

Narrating how he became addicted, Sekeyere explained that a friend introduced him to the drug, which he initially used to cope with the severe pain he felt in his leg.

“That is my biggest problem right now. I’ve been on it for about two to three years. I had a friend who was into drugs, so we used to take it before eating or doing anything,” he shared.

“He also mixed it with weed to help ease the pain in my leg, because it was severe and I could feel it in my chest. That was the only way I could sleep and eat.”

Reflecting on his football career, Sekeyere recounted playing alongside former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan and former Asante Kotoko player Michael Helegbe at Liberty Professionals during the early to mid-2000s.

“Me, George Amoah, Asamoah Gyan, Felix Baffoe, and Michael Helegbe were all signed by Sellas Tetteh to Liberty. Coach Sellas took care of me and provided everything I needed until my leg injury began. I didn’t know what happened, but I started feeling pain in my leg every time I wore boots,” he recalled.

Owusu Sekeyere has since expressed a strong desire to overcome his addiction and seek help, hoping to turn his life around.
