Greater Accra MMDAs given 21-day ultimatum to remove billboards from footbridges, overpasses

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region to remove advertising billboards from gantries, pedestrian bridges, and vehicular footbridges within 21 days.

The directive, outlined in a Compliance Notice, cites violations of the Services-Advertising Specification for Outdoor Signs (GS: 847:2019), which mandates that road or bridge arches and gantries be used solely for traffic management.

The NRSA warned that enforcement actions will follow if MMDAs fail to comply.

In a statement, the NRSA said, “This action aims to reduce visual distractions on our roads and ensure footbridges and overpasses serve their primary purpose—safe and efficient traffic management.”

The Authority stressed that the measure prioritizes public safety, adding, “Advertising cannot compromise road safety.”

The NRSA urged advertisers and municipal authorities to collaborate in complying with the order to create safer road environments.
