Fight in Parliament over Okudzeto Ablakwa, Akandoh’s Vetting: What we know so far

Source of chaos

According to Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyire, who doubles as Minority Chief Whip, the Appointments Committee had agreed on vetting four nominees on January 30, 2025. However, five were vetted, and two more were being added, including the Minister-designate of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the Minister-designate for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, which generated the chaos.

Materials destroyed

As a result of the chaos between the Majority and Minority, microphones and tables were destroyed.

The Minority side was seen overturning the vetting table, destroying almost all the materials on it.

MPs fight each other

The Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson Nelson Dafeamokpor, was seen in a heated altercation with a colleague MP during the chaos.

NDC trying to bully NPP, Clerk of Appointment Committee NDC member

The Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the Clerk of Parliament of being a member of the National Democratic Congress ( NDC).

According to him, the woman has been doing the bidding of the NDC and causing confusion in the vetting process.

“For me, we have to ask the relevant questions. You are aware that some of the nominees… whom we have to ask the relevant questions, we will ask, and nothing will stop us from asking the necessary questions. It is not every nominee.

“Some of the nominees spend five minutes. NDC is always intimidating people; they think that they must always bully, and we will not accept any bullying. They can call us micro minority; they can say whatever they want to say. We have been cooperating with them today, and we agreed we want to do three,” he said in an interview on the floor of parliament on January 30, 2025.

He added, “The clerk to the committee is a partisan clerk; she is a typical NDC, and she agrees with them.”

Vetting room rescheduled to Speaker’s Conference Room due to microphones, tables being destroyed

The Majority Leader of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has disclosed that the vetting will no longer accommodate guests in the room as the previous venue for the vetting has been changed to the Speaker’s Conference Room, and that place cannot accommodate guests.

“It is not right to spend three hours/four hours questioning a nominee; it is not right. It provokes a lot of people. I am not saying we shouldn’t ask nominees questions, but let us be moderate in our approach.

“I can understand the passion and anger informing the decision to continue, even though today you have done so well,” he said.

He continues, “Indeed, today you have scheduled to vet three people. You agreed among yourselves and made it four. Then you agreed among yourselves and then extended it to six. Unfortunately, the development now makes it difficult to continue and implement the agreement. So, I am pleading with you, bear with us. We are ending procedures, and tomorrow we will continue.

“Because the machines can no longer function because they have been destroyed, we will look into that matter, and so we are adjourning to tomorrow at 9:00 am at the Speaker’s Conference Room.

“We are cautioning the nominees; the Speaker’s Conference Room is small; there wouldn’t be enough space, so please nominees don’t bring people because the place cannot accommodate people.”
