How China’s Visa Exemption Works

Under the visa exemption policy:

  • Duration: Stay up to 30 days without a visa.
  • Purpose: Tourism, business, family or friend visits, transit, and now cultural exchange.
  • Entry Requirements: Valid passport from an eligible country, confirmed accommodation, and return/onward ticket (in some cases).

Important: While the new visa waiver allows cultural exchange activities, paid work or study is still not allowed under this entry category.

24-Hour Visa-Free Transit for All Nationalities

In another major move, China has expanded its 24-hour visa-free transit policy to all international travellers, regardless of nationality.

How it works:

  • Travellers transiting through China for less than 24 hours can stay without a visa.
  • Available at most major international airports.
  • You must have an onward international ticket to a third country (not a return to the same country you came from).

This update provides greater flexibility for international flyers and makes China a convenient layover destination for travellers flying between continents.

10-Day Visa-Free Transit for 54 Countries

Alongside the new 24-hour transit rule, China offers a 10-day visa-free transit for travellers from 54 countries, including the US, UK, and Canada, available at 60 ports across 24 provinces for extended layovers.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re planning a trip to the Great Wall, a business meeting in Shanghai, or just a stopover on your way to Southeast Asia, China’s new visa rules are a game-changer. With expanded eligibility and longer stays, more travellers than ever can explore Mainland China without the hassle of applying for a visa.
