Watch as several unemployed nurses bump into Wode Maya as they ‘jakpa’ out of the country

Ghanaian freelance vlogger, Kobena Ackom, popularly referred to as Wode Maya, has urged the government to address the rising trend of unemployment among graduate nurses and midwives in the country.

During a recent trip abroad, he met a group of Ghanaian nurses departing the country for the United Kingdom to seek greener pastures, as shared on his X page on Monday, August 26, 2024.

In an interaction with the group of nurses, made up of females and males, they disclosed that they were travelling abroad to seek better opportunities because four years after completing their nursing trainings, they were yet to be posted, a situation that they said has made life unbearable for them.

“We have not been posted since we completed school four years ago,” one of the nurses stated.

Wode Maya subsequently appealed to the government to address the rising trend of unemployment among nurses in the country.

“This is brain drain. I think the government has to do something about this,” he stated.

The President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association of Ghana (GRNMA), Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, recently disclosed that close to 6,000 nurses and midwives left the country for greener pastures from August 2023 to August 2024.

According to her, some of the nurses cited poor remuneration as one of the reasons to move to other jurisdictions with better conditions of service.

“We have been collating the numbers from August last year till date, about 6,000 nurses have left Ghana in search of greener pastures,” she stated.
