The event was a magnet for notable figures from various spheres. The arena glittered with the presence of renowned politicians, celebrated musicians, acclaimed actresses, and other distinguished guests, all present to witness the boxing spectacle and honor the occasion.
Bouts Unfold: Mixed Fortunes for Ghanaian Fighters
The main event, the African Bridgerweight title bout, unfortunately, concluded earlier than expected. Ghana’s Jacob Dickson faced a formidable challenge from American opponent Andrew Tabiti. Dickson appeared to struggle with stamina, succumbing to heavy punches and being knocked out in the fourth round, leading to Tabiti claiming the title.
In a keenly contested African Bantamweight title fight, Ghanaian Theophilus Allotey delivered a powerful performance, flooring his opponent Daniel Gosh. After 12 rounds of intense action, Allotey was declared the winner by a split decision, with judges scoring 110-111, 118-110, and 110-118 in his favor.
Another exciting bout saw Abu Kamoko, son of boxing icon Bukom Banku, affectionately known as Ambitious Tilapia, secure a unanimous decision victory in his Lightweight match against Stephen Ackon. The judges scored the fight 60-53, 60-54, and 60-54, all in Tilapia’s favor after six rounds.
Several other bouts featuring boxers from Amir Khan’s promotion also took place throughout the evening, with both wins and losses for their stable.
A Galaxy of Stars Graces the Arena
The ‘Battle of the Beasts’ lived up to its billing not only with the fights but also with the impressive roster of attendees. Boxing royalty was well represented with British boxer Anthony Joshua and Ghanaian legend Azumah Nelson in attendance, adding to the prestige of the event.
The political landscape saw a strong presence, including Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams; National Sports Authority (NSA) boss, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah; and Ghana Football Association President, Kurt Okraku. Business mogul Ibrahim Mahama was present to support his nephew, Sharaf Mahama, alongside other politicians such as Ketu North MP, Edem Agbana.
The media and business fraternities were also well represented, with Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Despite Media, Osei Kwame Despite; Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong; and members of the East Legon Executive Fitness Club among the notable personalities.
The entertainment industry added to the glamour, with celebrities like D-Black, Fella Makafui, Kofi Kinaata, Kojo Blak, and the reigning TGMA Artiste of the Year, King Promise, who captivated the audience with a top-tier performance.
Unwavering Fan Enthusiasm
Throughout the night, the atmosphere in the Bukom Boxing Arena was electric. The capacity crowd, driven by an unyielding passion for boxing, roared with excitement, chanting and singing local ‘jama’ songs to fuel the energy of the event and rally behind their favorite fighters battling for supremacy. The ‘Battle of the Beasts’ truly delivered an unforgettable night of sport and spectacle in Accra.
