The President of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), Nick Mwendwa has described Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars as a weakling especially skipper Asamoah Gyan and his colleague Andre Dede Ayew for which reason they cannot make any difference in the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AfCON) slated for Egypt in June.
“We are not scared of Black Stars; you used to be a very big team but not anymore”, he asserted in an interview on Kumasi-based Angel FM and monitored by MyNewsGh.com.
Mwendwa giggled off the mention of Black Stars Captain, Asamoah Gyan and Fenerbache midfielder, Andre Ayew as pillars in the Ghana setup, saying, “the likes of Gyan, Ayew; to me I think the curtain is falling on their international careers slowly by slowly”.
His comments come ahead of a last Group F battle for the top spot in the ongoing AFCON 2019 qualifiers between the Black Stars of Ghana and the Harambee Stars of Kenya at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, March 23, 2019.
Both teams having already sealed their places in the tournament, would only be playing to determine who tops Group F, with Kenya leading Ghana by one point on the log as it stands now.
“So unless you have some fresh legs, we should be scared; if you are depending on them for AfCON I’m sorry for you” he teased Gyan and Ayew whom he described as feeble.
Recounting the prowess of the Ghana team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Mwendwa said, “I think you had the best squad in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and I haven’t seen more talents after that time from your side”, he told Angel Sports.
Ghana would be looking to break the over three decade-old trophy drought at the senior men’s stage on the African Continent, this time in Egypt.
With an aging team coupled with troubles in the nation’s football administration leading to the dissolution of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), many pundits have written the Black Stars off from making any good impact in this campaign.
Coach Kwasi Appiah could get the sack if he fails to deliver the trophy to Ghana, Chairman of the Normalization Committee, Dr Kofi Amoah has hinted.
The Ghana Black Stars have won the African Cup on four occasions.
