Consumer Advocacy Centre sues NCA

The Consumer Advocacy Centre (CAC), Ghana, has sued the National Communications Authority (NCA) over the influx of unregistered SIM cards in the country.

The situation, they argued has led to consumers losing millions of cedis to fraudsters who use these unregistered SIM cards to dupe people.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Consumer Advocacy Centre, Mr Benjamin Essuman disclosed this on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Thursday.

He said they have filed a suit at the High Court for the NCA to be compelled to enforce LI 2006 which stipulates that, “all SIM cards in the country must be registered at designated offices for easy authentication.”

Mr Essuman noted that consumers are being threatened on a daily basis by criminals with such illegally registered SIM cards without a trace to these criminals.

“It is our considered opinion that these criminal activities are possible as a result of violations and sidestepping brought about by the flagrant disregard for LI 2006,” he stated.

The CAC PRO said they are also praying the court to order the defendants to register and activate SIM cards only at designated offices.

“We are thereby praying the court to uphold our Ghanaian law and grant our reliefs that have been carefully plotted to guarantee a safe telephone market for consumers and help businesses,” he added.
