AFCON is a more competitive tournament than Euros – Herve Renard

Former Ghana physical trainer Herve Renard has rated the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a more competitive tournament than the European Championship.

The ongoing Euros in Germany has attracted criticism from fans and the media, with many describing it as predictable.

However, the former Saudi Arabia coach stated that while you can predict the four teams that will win the Euros, the AFCON is highly unpredictable.

“The Euro is no less competitive than the Africa Cup of Nations. In the Euros, from the beginning, you know at least four or five teams that can win the trophy, but in Africa, all teams are capable of winning the trophy,” he said, as reported by bsnsports.com.ng.

“You can be surprised by the results too. Big nations are often beaten by lesser ones. For me, AFCON has a lot of passion and is so interesting, with many shocks. Many people love it,” he added.

Renard has previously managed the Zambia national team, with whom he won the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

He also won the competition in 2015 with the Ivory Coast, becoming the first coach to win two Africa Cup of Nations titles with different teams.

Additionally, he coached Morocco at the 2018 World Cup.
