Accra International Airport has received two major recognitions at the 8th Airports Council International (ACI) World Airport Experience Summit held in Istanbul, Türkiye.
The awards were presented during the global aviation gathering, which took place from August 31 to September 4, 2026, and brought together airport executives, customer experience specialists and other industry professionals from around the world.
Accra International Airport, operated by Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), was recognised as the Best Airport at Departures – Africa in the 2–5 million passengers category.
The airport also received the Customer Experience Accredited Airport – Level 1 recognition.
The latest honours place Ghana’s main international airport among facilities recognised internationally for their efforts to improve passenger experience and service delivery.
The summit, held under the theme “Airport Experience: The New Era,” focused on the changing expectations of air travellers and the growing importance of customer service, hospitality and human-centred experiences in the aviation industry.
More than 100 airports were recognised during the summit’s Gala and Awards Ceremony for their performance in customer experience.
The Customer Experience Accreditation is designed to help airports strengthen their ability to manage and improve passenger experiences. The programme assesses areas including stakeholder and employee engagement, training and staff development.
Meanwhile, the ACI Airport Service Quality programme provides a global benchmark for measuring passenger satisfaction and airport service performance.
Speaking after the recognition, GACL Managing Director Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare described the awards as an honour for Ghana and credited the achievement to the collective efforts of workers and stakeholders across the airport ecosystem.
She congratulated staff of Accra International Airport and encouraged them to continue working towards improved service standards.
Opare also stressed that the awards should not be viewed as the end of the airport’s improvement efforts, but rather as motivation to continue raising the standard of service offered to passengers.
The recognition comes as Ghana’s aviation sector continues to focus on improving the passenger experience and strengthening the country’s position as an important aviation hub in the region.
For GACL, the two awards provide international recognition of its ongoing efforts to improve the quality of services provided at Accra International Airport.
The company has indicated that continuous improvement in passenger experience remains a priority as the airport serves travellers arriving in and departing from Ghana.
The awards also provide a boost to Ghana’s aviation industry, highlighting the country’s progress in meeting international standards for airport customer experience.
