Mahama Discusses Ghana Airways Revival Plans with UK Lawmakers

President John Dramani Mahama has discussed plans to revive Ghana Airways with British lawmakers of Ghanaian heritage as part of efforts to strengthen aviation links between Ghana and the United Kingdom.

The discussions focused on the possibility of re-establishing a national airline and improving air connectivity, particularly on the Accra–London route, which serves as an important link for business travellers, tourists, students and members of the Ghanaian community living in the United Kingdom.

The proposed revival of Ghana Airways forms part of broader conversations about Ghana’s aviation future and the need to expand travel options between the country and key international destinations.

Ghana Airways, the country’s former national carrier, ceased operations in 2004 after years of financial and operational difficulties. Its closure left Ghana without a state-owned national airline, although several international carriers have continued to operate flights connecting the country to destinations across Africa, Europe and other regions.

Successive governments have explored ways to establish a new national airline, with proposals involving private investors and international aviation partners. However, the process has faced challenges relating to financing, partnerships and the development of a commercially sustainable business model.

The latest discussions involving Mahama and UK lawmakers signal continued interest in finding a pathway towards reviving the national carrier. A successful initiative would require clear arrangements covering funding, aircraft acquisition, regulatory approvals, management and the airline’s long-term commercial viability.

Improving air connectivity between Ghana and the United Kingdom could also have implications for trade, tourism and investment. The Accra–London route is particularly significant because of the longstanding economic, educational and cultural links between the two countries.

Additional airline capacity could provide travellers with more options and potentially increase competition on the route. However, the effect on ticket prices and passenger services would depend on the number of operators involved, available seats, operating costs and market demand.

Beyond aviation, Ghana and the United Kingdom maintain cooperation in several areas, including trade, investment, education and industrial development. Engagement with British lawmakers of Ghanaian heritage provides another channel through which issues affecting both countries can be discussed.

For Ghana, the establishment of a national carrier could create opportunities in aviation-related services, including employment, airport operations, maintenance and tourism. It could also provide a platform for strengthening the country’s connections with international markets.

Nevertheless, reviving Ghana Airways would require more than political support. A credible implementation plan, adequate capital, experienced management and effective oversight would be necessary to ensure that the airline can compete in the international aviation industry.

Details concerning the proposed airline’s ownership structure, investment commitments, operational timeline and potential aviation partners were not confirmed in the available reports.

The discussions therefore represent an engagement on the possibility of reviving Ghana’s former national carrier, while the next steps will depend on the development of a concrete plan and the arrangements required to make the proposal operational.
