A Ghanaian man identified as Ronnie Afriyie has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) for assistance after allegedly losing GH¢100,000 from his vehicle at the University of Ghana campus.
According to Afriyie, the incident occurred on Monday, September 28, 2026, outside the Stanbic Bank branch on the Legon campus.
He said he parked his vehicle in front of the bank between 2:30 p.m. and 2:40 p.m. and opened the boot to remove some money before entering the bank. He said he left the remaining cash inside the vehicle.
Afriyie told GHOne TV that two police officers and two security personnel were stationed near the vehicle at the time. He said he spent approximately 15 minutes inside the bank before returning to his car.
Upon his return, Afriyie allegedly discovered signs that the vehicle had been tampered with and realised that the remaining money was missing.
He said he was particularly concerned because of the security presence around the area when he left the vehicle. According to him, the police officers he had seen earlier were no longer at their post when he returned.
Afriyie subsequently reported the matter at the Legon Police Station, where a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer reportedly took his statement and accompanied him to the location of the alleged theft.
A major concern for Afriyie has been access to CCTV footage that could potentially help investigators establish what happened.
He reportedly said the cameras at the front of Stanbic Bank do not cover the particular area where his vehicle was parked. However, footage from a nearby Access Bank branch could potentially provide useful information.
According to Afriyie, he was informed that a police extract was required before the footage from the neighbouring bank could be accessed. He said he has made several follow-ups but has yet to receive the document.
The delay has reportedly frustrated him, particularly because he believes the CCTV footage could help investigators identify anyone involved in the alleged theft.
Afriyie has therefore appealed directly to the IGP to intervene and ensure that the matter receives the necessary attention.
He is seeking assistance with obtaining the relevant CCTV footage and advancing the investigation into the disappearance of the money.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged theft have not yet been fully established, and no individual has been publicly identified as a suspect in connection with the case.
The petition to the IGP is expected to bring renewed attention to Afriyie’s complaint as he seeks answers over how the money disappeared from his vehicle while it was parked near the bank.
