‘You never rule out any position’ – Asiedu Nketiah on possibility to join NDC flagbearer race

The National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has reacted to rumours that he is eyeing the party’s presidential candidate position for the 2028 general election.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews on, June 25, 2025, Asiedu Nketiah, who sought to address rumours of his presidential ambitions indicated that it was too early to be discussing who leads the NDC to the 2028 polls now.
While signaling that such an early move is disrespectful to Ghanaians, he said that he would not rule out the possibility of becoming the party’s flagbearer.
He explained that politics is ruled by ambition, and therefore, it does not make sense for one to say they will avoid certain positions.
“No serious politician rules out any position. It’s known that it is ambition that drives politics. And if you rush to rule things out, you get to a point where you’ll be at a corner where you regret having ruled out certain positions,” he said.
The NDC national chairman, who was a 3-term Member of Parliament, disclosed that he never thought of becoming a legislator but was encouraged to do so by some of his relations.
“If I want to demonstrate with my own life. To begin with, I never dreamt of going to Parliament. I was a trained business guy, and I was a marketing manager, bank manager, a stockbroker and so on.
“So, the thought of going to Parliament never crossed my mind at all until pressure began mounting from my own people that you have to do this, you have to represent our community to do this work. Then you say, okay, let me do it for one year or one term and then go and do something else. Then you do it and everybody says, you have done it so well that without you, we can’t get a good replacement, so continue… I never planned to go to Parliament at all,” he said.
