Popular Ghanaian actor, Yaw Dabo, has come to the defence of former President John Agyekum Kufuor following derogatory comments made by Dela Edem, a communicator for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) about the elderly statesman.
During an appearance on Accra-based TV XYZ, Edem used unsavoury language, suggesting that Kufuor’s current health issues were a result of his actions as president.
This followed Kufuor’s endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the presidential race.
The comments have been widely condemned by various Ghanaian personalities and the NDC itself, which has distanced itself from Edem’s remarks.
Despite issuing an apology, Edem continues to face backlash for his statements.
In a passionate response on his social media pages, Yaw Dabo criticised Dela Edem for disrespecting an elderly statesman, especially someone of Kufuor’s stature, who has achieved significant milestones in his career.
He questioned Edem’s qualifications to speak against the former president, suggesting that he hasn’t accomplished nearly as much.
“How old are you? Someone who has reached the age of 86? Watch yourself!
“Only people who have grown up can speak about their elders. You haven’t achieved half of what he has achieved. You don’t even qualify to be the former president’s gateman!” he said.
Dabo urged Edem and others to refrain from making disrespectful remarks and pointed out that politics should not be an excuse for such behaviour.
“We all know politics is a dirty game, but that doesn’t mean you should open your mouth and say anything against your elders. If it were your child who had gone to insult his elders, what would you say to him or her? Don’t allow politics to make you say things you will regret,” he added.
Yaw Dabo joins a host of other personalities including former Head of the Forestry Commission, Charles Owusu; NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye; and the NDC itself, who have condemned Dela Edem for his comments.
