Grammy award-winning American gospel singer Kirk Franklin has shared the story behind his decision to cut ties with his biological mother twenty years ago.
Speaking on the “Funky Friday” podcast, Franklin recounted a family intervention that was organized to support his sister, who had recently been released from prison and was battling drug addiction.
Franklin explained that he was the only family member actively trying to help her despite feeling overwhelmed by the situation.
During the intervention, Franklin’s mother introduced her new husband. Initially, the meeting seemed to be going well, but it took a dramatic turn when, after a heated argument with his mother’s new husband, his mother chose to walk out of the house with him, leaving Franklin and his sister behind.
Franklin expressed the deep hurt he felt when his mother sided with her husband instead of staying with her children, whom she had not raised or nurtured.
“She took that man’s hand and walked out with him. And I promised myself that as a little boy, I couldn’t protect myself, but as a grown man, I would never be put in a position where you would treat me like that again,” he said.
