Why John Boadu blocked his uncle from contesting Kennedy Agyapong in NPP election

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has revealed how he prevented his uncle from contesting the Assin Central parliamentary seat against Kennedy Agyapong in the party’s internal election.
According to John Boadu, who was the NPP General Secretary at the time, he considered Kennedy Agyapong’s chances of winning the election and aimed to prevent any internal rift that might arise from his family member’s decision to contest him. As a result, he disqualified his uncle from the race.
Speaking on the principle of neutrality in party leadership, Boadu explained that most decisions taken by party leaders are based on merit and the greater good of the party, rather than personal or financial interests.
He also dismissed allegations that some candidates were allowed to go unopposed in exchange for money or personal favours.
“Nobody in this party can ever say that we allowed someone to go unopposed because they gave us money, never. We make such decisions with a clear conscience and objectivity,” he said in an interview with Otec FM, which was shared on social media.
“Look, my own family member, my uncle, he wanted to contest Kennedy Agyapong in the 2020 elections for Assin Central. I assessed the situation and realized Kennedy Agyapong had been an MP for a long time.
“So, if my uncle had contested and lost, and speak ill of Kennedy Agyapong, how could he go to other constituencies and campaign for the party? That would have damaged his image. So, I disqualified my own family member,” Boadu explained.
