What Kufuor said to Bawumia after 2024 Election defeat

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has recounted the words of encouragement he received from former President John Agyekum Kufuor after his defeat in the 2024 general elections.

According to a report by 3news.com.gh, he made this known during an engagement with the New Patriotic Party Caucus in Parliament on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

Dr Bawumia recounted, “Sometimes, I hear people ask, ‘Where do we start from?’ The words of Pres Kufuor always ring in my mind. He told me after the defeat that in 1996, when he had 39%, he too wondered where to start from. But with unity behind him and hard work in just 4 years, we crossed 50%. In the last election, we got 41%.”

He expressed confidence that with unity and a common purpose, Ghanaians will take a decision to vote the NPP back into power.

Dr Bawumia also expressed gratitude to the NPP MPs for their work in the 9th Parliament.

“Many have likened you to the Minority of the 2nd Parliament led by our father, J.H Mensah. The party will be forever grateful to you. Let me take this opportunity also to commend the back benchers/first timers, who have sent shocks throughout the waves with their sterling performances. You have qualitatively proven your inclusion. I also appreciate the leadership and continuing MPs for giving the back benchers the platform to shine. This is the kind of unity of purpose and understanding that we need to win elections once again.

“I call you The Mighty Minority of 88 Infantry Battalion, commanded by Hon Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin. My first reason for coming here is to say a big thank you to you directly. And through you, say thank you to the many in your constituencies who worked for us in various ways,” he added.
