Volta region GJA lifts ban on NDC
The Volta Region chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called off its boycott of activities of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Nkwanta South constituency.
It follows a peaceful resolution of an assault case between the party’s Constituency Secretary, Prince Succeed Fiagadzi and Adom TV reporter in Oti region.
A statement signed by the President of the GJA Volta region branch, AB Kafui Kanyi and copied to Adomonline.com said.
The reporter, Obremponba Kwame Owusu was attacked and his equipment destroyed when he attempted filming an altercation between supporters of two aspirants in the Nkwanta constituency during the party’s parliamentary primaries last Saturday.
The GJA angered by the act, boycotted activities of the party to serve as a deterrent to other political parties.
But the prompt response of the NDC’s constituency, regional and national executives resolved the matter.
After series of meetings with the GJA Volta region executives, the party agreed to pay the medical bills of the Adom TV reporter and also replace his damaged equipment.
Also, the Nkwanta South constituency Secretary, Mr. Fiagadzi has been referred to the party’s disciplinary committee for possible sanctions.
“GJA-Volta accepts the unreserved apology and wishes to state that, it will not allow media practitioners in Oti and Volta regions to be easy targets for people with unpolished behaviour” the statement said.
The statement also called on political parties to develop policies on protection of journalists and demonstrate practical commitment to press freedom.
