Victor Boniface narrates Super Eagles’ bizarre treatment in Libya

Nigeria striker Victor Boniface has opened up about the poor treatment the Super Eagles team has been subjected to upon their arrival in Libya for the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

According to widespread reports, the team’s chartered flight was diverted to a different location as it was approaching Benghazi Airport for landing. The Libyan federation also failed to send any delegation to meet the team or arrange for a shuttle to convey the players to their hotel, which is about a three-hour drive.

Reacting to the inhumane treatment on his X handle, Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface wrote: “Been at the airport for almost 13 hours, no food, no Wi-Fi, nowhere to sleep. Africa, we can do better,” tagging CAF’s handle.

Team captain William Troost-Ekong has also disclosed that the Super Eagles have decided to boycott the game and return home to Nigeria.

“At this point, we have called for our Nigerian government to intervene and rescue us. As the captain, together with the team, we have decided that we will NOT play this game. CAF should look at the report and what is happening here. Even if they decide to allow,” the Al Kholood defender also wrote on X.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to play Libya on Tuesday, October 15, in the return encounter of the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifiers. The three-time African champions defeated the Mediterranean Knights 1-0 in the first leg on Friday, October 11, courtesy of Dele-Bashiru’s strike in the 87th minute.
