Ukraine Launches Major Drone Attack on Russia, Striking Oil Terminal in St Petersburg

Ukraine has launched one of its largest reported drone attacks on Russia, targeting several locations, including an oil terminal in St Petersburg, as the war between the two countries continues to escalate.

The overnight assault, reported on October 17–18, 2026, involved a large number of drones and reportedly caused damage to infrastructure in parts of Russia. The attack highlights Ukraine’s continued use of long-range unmanned aircraft to strike facilities considered important to Moscow’s military and economic operations.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 1,015 Ukrainian drones over different parts of the country during the reported operation. The figure was provided by Russian authorities and could not be independently verified.

One of the reported targets was the St Petersburg Oil Terminal, a major facility involved in the handling and export of petroleum products. Reports indicated that a fire broke out within the terminal’s grounds following the attack.

Other locations were also reportedly affected, including a logistics centre and a data centre associated with Russian technology companies. The reported strikes raised fresh concerns about the vulnerability of infrastructure located far from the main battlefront.

Russian authorities reported that one person had been killed and five others injured in the attacks. Residential properties were also reported damaged, although the full extent of the destruction and the operational impact on the targeted facilities remained unclear.

Ukraine has increasingly relied on long-range drones to attack oil refineries, fuel storage facilities, military-related installations and logistics networks inside Russia. Kyiv views such operations as part of its efforts to weaken Moscow’s capacity to sustain its invasion, while Russian forces continue to launch missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian territory.

The latest reported assault comes amid diplomatic tensions involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump. Trump has criticised Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure, expressing concerns about their potential impact on energy prices and diplomatic efforts to bring the conflict to an end.

Zelenskyy, meanwhile, has defended Ukraine’s campaign against Russian energy facilities, pointing to continued Russian attacks on Ukraine’s own energy infrastructure. He has argued that Moscow’s actions undermine efforts to reduce hostilities and protect critical infrastructure.

The two countries have repeatedly accused each other of targeting facilities essential to civilian life and economic activity. Energy infrastructure has become a major focus of the conflict because damage to refineries, terminals and electricity facilities can affect fuel supplies, industrial operations and the broader economy.

Despite diplomatic discussions and international calls for de-escalation, attacks on strategic infrastructure have continued. The growing reach of drone technology has enabled both sides to strike targets far beyond the immediate front lines, making air defence and infrastructure protection increasingly important.

The reported attack on St Petersburg’s oil terminal underscores the continuing importance of energy facilities in the conflict. However, the precise extent of the damage, the number of drones that reached their intended targets and the longer-term effects of the operation remain subject to further confirmation.

As the war continues, developments involving long-range drones and energy infrastructure are likely to remain central to military assessments and diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the fighting.
