UDS-Navrongo sued for rigging SRC elections
On 5th March, 2021 students of UDS received a memo from the office of students affairs, which sought to allow only level100s(CK-Tedam students) to contest SRC leadership but continuing students(UDS students) will be forced to form liaison officers. However, I Alfred Asante petitioned the university council on August 25,2021, the council intervened and it was resolved to allow all students to contest.
On February 17, 2022, SRC/NUGS elections were conducted, glaring irregularities were identified before, during and after the elections. Five(5) candidates who contested the elections excluding the supposed winner rejected the results declared by the SRC electoral commission.
After chancing and listening to leaked audio, the supposed winner made it categorically clear that it was contrived and schemed to push VC and Tescon agenda.
An investigation committee was set up by the VC through the Dean of students to probe into the irregularities that were identified and aspirants submitted their evidential materials to the committee. The committee however finished their investigations and kept it to themselves. Students were aggrieved and furious on the delay of the report because they had spent more than a month and the semester is almost ending.
On Friday, 8th April, 2022, I together with some colleagues of mine were arrested and detained, on the basis that management suspects that we are behind a particular WhatsApp account unleashing harsh words to university management and the investigation committee on WhatsApp platform requesting for the outcome of the elections. Surprisingly, a former SRC President who happens to be a foundational council member of CKT-UTAS came and asked why we’ve been arrested and detained, the police therefore got him arrested too.
The Presidential candidates have requested for the report on the investigations to the elections but till date we’ve not been given for no reason.
But upon my further investigation I got the committee’s report which says the the elections should be reconducted but the Dean of students mischievously went ahead to swear the supposed winner in as SRC president and ignored the committee’s findings and recommendations which seek to bring fairness.
