Danger looms at Madina-Adenta highway as street lights go off again
Residents of Adenta in Adenta Municipality of Greater Accra region are once again living in fear as a section of the street lights and some traffic lights on Madina-Adenta highway have stopped working for a week now, MyNewsGh.com can report.
The street lights from Adenta Reigns Junction to Adenta Barrier and the traffic lights at Adenta SDA junction have been nonfunctional for the past one week, making it unsafe for both pedestrians and drivers who ply the stretch.
Some residents who spoke to MyNewsGh.com lamented, they do not know why the lights are off, and most surprisingly, the traffic lights at SDA junction, because the junction is noted as the most dangerous place, and has recorded the highest number of accidents on the highway.
They are calling on the authorities to act quickly by fixing the nonfunctional street lights and traffic lights to prevent the looming danger that may befall them.
The assembly member for Adenta West electoral area and an executive member of the group #FixOurFootBridgesNow, Mr Rashid Osei Bonsu in an interview with MyNewsGh.com explained, the switch that controls the lights from Reigns Junction to Adenta Barrier got spoilt and they are trying to buy a new one to replace it.
“The issue is that there is a switch that is attached to all the lighting system, and some of them were spoilt. They are like fuses when one blows, one side goes off, and as at when I got the information, we are trying to get the new one to replace it. That is why that side is off because they need to replace that electrical circuit that is there” Mr. Rashid stated.
Mr Rashid revealed, personnel from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) visited the site last week Friday, so he is very optimistic, the street lights will be fixed before the end of this week.
Background
Residents along the Madina Adenta highway on Monday, 12th November, embarked on a peaceful walk to push for the completion of some six uncompleted footbridges along the stretch from Madina Firestone to Adenta Barrier.
The protest stems from the spate of pedestrian knockdowns on the stretch, with the latest being the killing of a first-year student of the West Africa Senior High School (WASS) Thursday, November 8, which sparked spontaneous protest amid burning of car tyres.
Though government officials had said they could work on the uncompleted footbridges in 2019, the incident caused the government awarded the contract to multiple contractors and work has already began on the footbridges.
President of the republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo last week inspected the ongoing work on the footbridges as part of his Greater Accra Regional tour.
