Two Fined, One at Large in Diesel Theft at AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine

Two residents of Mile 7 in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality, Emmanuel Tawiah, a labourer, and Ibrahim Mohammed, a businessman, have been arrested and each fined GH¢1,560 in connection with a series of diesel thefts at the AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine.

Prosecuting the case before the Tarkwa District Court, Police Sergeant Enoch Assan-Donkoh stated that the complainant, Gilbert Adom Mensah, an employee of the mining company, had reported persistent incidents of diesel theft. This led residents of the Mile 7 community to form a watchdog committee to help address the issue.

According to Sergeant Assan-Donkoh, in the early hours of January 15, 2025, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Michael Boamah, a member of the watchdog committee, observed two individuals, Tawiah and an accomplice identified as Arhin (who is currently at large), each carrying a jerry can suspected to contain stolen diesel. Boamah reportedly followed them to a nearby residence belonging to Mohammed.

When confronted, the individuals failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the source of the fuel. Boamah then alerted other committee members, and with the assistance of police officers from the Iduapriem Mine, Tawiah and Mohammed were apprehended.

According to a report by adomonline.com dated June 16, 2025, the suspects were subsequently handed over to the police along with the jerry cans of diesel. Further investigations revealed that Tawiah and Arhin had conspired to siphon diesel from parked heavy-duty machines at Amax Yard, located within the Iduapriem Mine concession, and subsequently sold the stolen fuel to Mohammed.

Both Tawiah and Mohammed were detained for further investigation. Police are actively pursuing Arhin, who remains at large.

The court, presided over by Charles Owusu Nsiah, has adjourned the case to allow for the continuation of investigations.
