Ghana international Thomas Partey delivered a commanding performance in midfield as Arsenal dismantled Sporting CP 5-1 in their UEFA Champions League clash on Tuesday, November 26, 2024.

The Black Stars star featured for the full 90 minutes, orchestrating play in a victory that underscored the Gunners’ European ambitions.

Arsenal wasted no time asserting their dominance, taking an early lead in the 7th minute. Jurrien Timber’s pinpoint cross found Gabriel Martinelli, who calmly tapped in at the far post to break the deadlock. The Gunners doubled their lead midway through the first half, with Partey playing a pivotal role.

His incisive through ball set up Bukayo Saka, who provided a perfect assist for Kai Havertz to slot home. Sporting CP, missing coach Rúben Amorim, struggled to contain Arsenal’s relentless pressure.

Before halftime, Arsenal added a third. Declan Rice delivered a precise corner to the unmarked Gabriel Magalhães, whose powerful header made it 3-0, leaving the Portuguese side with a mountain to climb.

Sporting attempted a comeback early in the second half, capitalizing on a set-piece. Gonçalo Inácio flicked a header past David Raya to reduce the deficit. However, any hopes of a Sporting revival were dashed when a late challenge on Martin Ødegaard resulted in a penalty for Arsenal. Saka confidently converted the spot-kick, restoring the visitors’ three-goal cushion.

Arsenal sealed the emphatic victory in the 82nd minute. Substitute Mikel Merino’s long-range effort was parried by goalkeeper Franco Israel, but Leandro Trossard was perfectly positioned to nod in the rebound.

The 5-1 triumph marked Arsenal’s first away win in this season’s Champions League and highlighted their growing confidence under Mikel Arteta.

Partey’s standout display in midfield was instrumental in the Gunners’ fluid attacking performance as they surged up the group table with authority.
