Teachers picket MoE over salary arrears

Some teachers calling themselves Victims of Salary Arrears are expected to picket the Ministry of Education today, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 over government’s failure to settle their five to eight months’ salary arrears.

The aggrieved teachers say all previous efforts to have government pay them their arrears have proven futile, hence their decision to besiege the ministry.

“We are going to picket the ministry. We deem it fit to exercise our right to go there and fight for our cause; that is basically why we are doing it. If we do not get our money, well, what we will be doing, I don’t want to say will be ‘annoying’, but it is still part of our constitutional right. The salaries of teachers are not even enough for what they [government officials] receives as sitting allowances,” Convener for the group, David Kwaku Xefu stated on Monday, 6 August 2018.

Both the Ghana Education Service and the MoE have admitted owing the teachers and have pleaded for more time to enable them sort out the payments but the teachers are adamant.
