Take good care of teachers – Kufuor to government

Former President John Agyekum Kufour has urged the Akufo-Addo-led government to make teachers proud of their chosen profession by prioritising their condition of service so that they can impact good character in students.

Speaking at the 70th anniversary celebration and speech and prize giving day of Prempeh college held in Kumasi on Saturday, 30 November 2019, Mr Kufuor said taking good care of teachers will make them work professionally.

He noted that teachers are called upon not only to teach the academics but are also to act in place of parents in terms of character development.

He said if the teachers are going to be professionals and impact positive character in students, then they should be looked after very well.

“If the teachers are going to be professional teachers, then I will plead that they should be looked after very well because they are called upon not only to teach the academics, they are called upon to act in place of parents in terms of character development…,” the former Ghanaian leader said.

“We must make them thoroughly professionals in teaching, they should be proud as [teachers]. These days because salaries are not big, the teacher even as he stands in front of the black board is thinking of the market too and it doesn’t work properly in developing character and literacy in the youth,” he added.
