The Ghana Police Service has arrested a Nigerian national identified as Augustine Okechukwu Maazi following an operation that reportedly foiled a planned robbery targeting banks in the Labone area of Accra.
According to a police situational report, officers received intelligence at about 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, that a robbery syndicate was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank, all located within the Labone enclave.
A police team was subsequently deployed to the area, where the suspected members of the group were reportedly spotted in vehicles parked close to the banks.
The police said that after the suspects noticed the presence of officers, one of the vehicles quickly drove away in an attempt to escape.
Officers reportedly pursued the vehicle and managed to arrest Maazi, while another occupant escaped.
The occupants of a second vehicle also reportedly attempted to flee. According to the police account, gunfire was exchanged during the pursuit, resulting in two of the suspects being killed.
The identities of the two deceased suspects had not immediately been established at the time of the report. Their bodies were reportedly deposited at a morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
Police said they recovered two vehicles believed to have been connected to the operation. These included a Toyota Highlander and a Hyundai Tucson.
A blow pistol was also reportedly recovered during the operation.
Maazi remains in police custody and is assisting investigators as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged planned robbery and identify other suspected accomplices.
The police have described the operation as a successful intervention that prevented the alleged robbery from taking place.
The incident has drawn public attention because of the location of the suspected targets. Labone is home to several financial institutions and other businesses, making security in the area an important concern.
The police have also commended members of the public who provide information that can assist in preventing criminal activities.
Investigations are continuing, with authorities expected to gather further evidence and establish the identities and roles of the individuals allegedly involved.
