The Wenchi Municipal Assembly in the Bono Region has commenced the installation of solar-powered streetlights at strategic locations across the municipality as part of efforts to improve nighttime security and support local economic activities.
A total of 144 solar-powered streetlights are expected to be installed under the project, according to the Wenchi Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Gloria Opoku Gyamfi.
Speaking during an installation exercise in Wenchi, the MCE said the project would provide lighting at several important locations within the municipality, particularly along major roads and around busy public areas.
Some of the locations identified for the installation include the Offuman Road at the VRA Junction near the Wenchi Methodist University.
Other streetlights will be installed around the Saabo Market, off the Municipal Health Directorate Road, as well as the Agric Research Junction, which links to the Offuman Road.
The project will also cover the Wenchi Methodist Hospital Road, specifically the stretch between the Methodist Church and the Wenchi Astro Turf Park.
According to Gloria Opoku Gyamfi, the installation of the solar-powered streetlights is expected to improve visibility after dark and contribute to enhanced security within the municipality.
The initiative is also expected to support economic activities by providing better lighting around areas where residents, traders and other businesses operate after sunset.
The project is being funded by the government through the Ministry of Energy, with the Municipal Assembly overseeing the installation across the selected locations.
The move comes as local authorities continue to explore ways of improving infrastructure and public amenities in communities, particularly in areas where adequate street lighting can contribute to safer movement at night.
Solar-powered streetlights also provide an alternative to conventional street lighting because they generate electricity from sunlight and can operate without depending directly on the conventional power grid.
For residents and businesses in the selected areas, the project is expected to make movement and commercial activities more convenient during nighttime hours.
The Wenchi Municipal Assembly has therefore described the installation as an important intervention aimed at addressing lighting needs while contributing to broader development within the municipality.
With 144 units planned for installation at strategic points, the project is expected to extend improved lighting to several key areas in Wenchi and parts of the municipality.
