N/R: Police exchange gun shots with armed robbers, 3 motorbikes seized

Police in the Northern region have seized three motor bikes from suspected armed robbers who blocked the Savelugu-Walewale highway in the early hours of today, Thursday, after minutes of gun battle.

The police upon a distress call about undertaking robbering on the highway assembled, and confronted the suspects at the scene, the public relations officer of the police, DSP Mohammed Ussif Tanko explained to NorthernWebGh.com.

“Police received information today at about 2:00 am that armed robbers had blocked the road at Gbanyali near the Savelugu School for the Deaf. Men were quickly mobilized from police check points on the road to deal with the situation. When Police got the scene, the robbers numbering about six had lined up vehicles and had just started to rob them”.

According to him, the robber’s opened fire on the police, which the police returned fire. Adding that the armed robbers took cover into the bush.

He said the robbers abandoned three motorbikes at the scene, which is currently in police custody at the Savulugu police station.

Dsp Mohammed Ussif Tanko indicated that some of the robbers might have escaped with gunshot wounds, and he therefore called on the public, hospitals, herbalists and other health facilities to report suspicious injuries to police for necessary action.

He entreated residents of Savelugu, and its environs to be on the lookout for strange and suspicious persons in the area to help the police apprehend the suspects.

He further implored the general public to assist the police trace the owners of the motorbikes.

Dsp Ussif Tanko said police has commence investigations to identify, and arrest who ever matters in the incident.
