Suspected phone thief allegedly swallows five SIM cards during arrest

A 27-year-old man has allegedly swallowed five SIM cards after being intercepted by police in connection with suspected phone theft in the Central Region.

The suspect, identified as Awudu Baba, was reportedly arrested at a police checkpoint along the Kasoa-Bawjiase Highway around midnight on September 19, 2026.

According to the Central East Regional Police Command, officers found five mobile phones in the suspect’s possession during the arrest.

The phones reportedly included an iPhone 6, an iPhone 6 Plus, a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and a Samsung A12.

Police also discovered five SIM cards in his possession. Authorities said the suspect allegedly swallowed the SIM cards after realising that he was about to be arrested.

Central East Regional Police Commander DCOP Francis Nchor disclosed the incident while providing details of the arrest.

According to the police, preliminary investigations indicated that the mobile phones had allegedly been stolen from the Awutu Bawjiase area of the Central Region.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged thefts are still being investigated, and the suspect is expected to assist investigators as inquiries continue.

Police have appealed to residents who recently lost mobile phones in the area to report their cases to the authorities.

The Central East Regional Police Command said this could help investigators identify the recovered phones and return them to their rightful owners where ownership is established.

The arrest forms part of ongoing police efforts to tackle suspected phone theft and related criminal activity along major routes within the region.

Authorities have not indicated that the suspect has been convicted of any offence, and the allegations against him remain subject to investigation and the legal process.

The case has attracted attention because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the suspect’s alleged attempt to conceal the SIM cards following his arrest.

Police are expected to continue investigations to establish how the phones were obtained and determine whether the suspect may be connected to other reported cases of phone theft in the area.
