Rare Glimpse: Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Pictured with Children

A truly uncommon and heartwarming photograph of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, alongside two of his children, Oheneba Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem and Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie, has recently emerged on social media. The image offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the private life of the highly revered Ashanti monarch, a figure whose public appearances are typically characterized by official regalia and ceremonial duties.

The photograph, shared by the popular social media account “Asante Nation” on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, June 13, 2025, quickly garnered attention due to its rarity. The caption accompanying the image simply stated, “Oheneba Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem and Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie with their father, the King.” This casual yet significant portrayal provides a unique perspective on the man behind the Golden Stool, showcasing a familial side rarely seen by the public.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, born Nana Barima Kwaku Duah on May 6, 1950, ascended to the prestigious position of the 16th occupant of the Golden Stool following the demise of his predecessor and “senior brother,” Otumfuo Opoku Ware II. He was officially enstooled as Asantehene on April 26, 1999, a pivotal moment in Ashanti history that came after his selection on February 25 of the same year.

Beyond his profound traditional authority as the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II also holds significant roles in modern Ghanaian society. Notably, he serves as the Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), a testament to his commitment to education and national development. His personal life includes his marriage to Lady Julia, who often accompanies him on official engagements. This newly surfaced photograph, however, provides a tender and personal counterpoint to his well-known public persona, reinforcing his role as a father within his royal household.
