President John Dramani Mahama has explained his administration’s decision to pursue the construction of 10 new stadia across Ghana, saying the initiative is aimed at addressing the country’s sports infrastructure needs and creating better opportunities for athletes.
The decision represents a revision of an earlier plan to construct six mini-stadia in Ghana’s six newly created regions. The government has instead moved towards a broader programme involving 10 sporting facilities across the country.
President Mahama has indicated that the proposed facilities are not intended to serve football alone. Rather, they are expected to accommodate several sporting disciplines and provide spaces where athletes can train and compete.
According to recent reports, the new facilities are expected to include football pitches, athletics infrastructure and courts for sports such as volleyball, among other disciplines.
The President’s explanation comes amid ongoing concerns about the availability and condition of sporting facilities in different parts of Ghana. While some regions have established stadiums and sports complexes, access to modern facilities remains uneven across the country.
The government believes expanding sports infrastructure can contribute to the development of young talent by providing athletes with appropriate places to train and compete.
The planned construction is also expected to support the development of sporting disciplines beyond football. Ghana has a long history of producing athletes in athletics, boxing and other sports, but inadequate infrastructure has often been identified as one of the challenges facing talent development.
The proposed facilities could therefore provide a platform for young athletes to pursue their chosen disciplines without having to travel long distances to access suitable infrastructure.
The government’s revised approach comes as Ghana continues to invest in sports facilities. The country already has major venues and newer sporting complexes, including the Borteyman Sports Complex, which was developed ahead of the 2023 African Games.
However, the proposal to construct 10 additional stadia has also generated public discussion over whether existing facilities should first be rehabilitated or upgraded.
Some observers have argued that improving existing stadiums could be more practical, while others believe new facilities are necessary to expand access to modern sports infrastructure across the country.
The government’s position is that the new stadium programme will help broaden Ghana’s sporting infrastructure and create facilities capable of serving multiple disciplines.
If implemented as planned, the project could significantly increase the number of modern sports facilities available to communities across the country.
For President Mahama, the initiative forms part of a wider effort to strengthen sports development and provide Ghanaian athletes with the infrastructure needed to nurture their talents and compete at higher levels.
