Chef Smith is not registered with the Chefs Association of Ghana – General Secretary

The Chefs Association of Ghana has stated that Chef Ebenezer Smith is not registered with the association even though he had their logo on his clothing during his Guiness World Record attempt.

This clarification comes after Guinness World Records (GWR) reported no knowledge of Chef Smith’s attempt to set a new record for the longest individual cooking marathon.

In a GH One TV interview, the Association’s General Secretary, Peter Agbovi, remarked, “You can call him a chef because he is a professional chef, but Chef Smith is not registered with our association.”

Peter Agbovi added that the association only became aware of Smith’s cooking event via social media and was surprised to find their logo on his clothing.

Despite attempts to get Smith to join the Association, he did not do so, leading them to refrain from endorsing his record attempt.

“We only got to know when he had already started his cook-a-thon, we took notice of the fact that he was wearing an attire that had our logo on it. We contacted his team and told them that if he wanted to use our logo, then he do the needful by registering with the association.

“That is why we never shared his videos or supported him on any of our social media platforms. Even after his cook-a-thon we didn’t hear from him until the announcement,” he said.

On the subject of the GWR certificate controversy, Peter Agbovi shared his dismay, stating that the body has yet to establish communication with him to ascertain the reason behind his actions.

“It’s unfortunate that it’s a fake Guinness World Records certificate. It was heartbreaking to see a colleague chef come out with a fake certificate, and we don’t know if it’s his own doing. We have not been able to speak with him yet,” he said.

What happened?

Ghanaian Chef Ebenezer Smith conducted his cooking marathon from February 1 to March 6, 2024, at Amadia Shopping Centre located at Spintex, Accra.

On July 2, 2024, Chef Smith claimed to have set a new record for the longest cooking marathon.

However, his claim was disputed by Guinness World Records (GWR), which stated they never received an application from him, the certificate he presented was not recognized by GWR, and the official record is still held by Alan Fisher of Ireland.

Chef Smith’s arrest at a press conference raised further questions. The event sponsors, Amadia Shopping Centre, explained they had a contract with Chef Smith to support his attempt and were unaware of the press conference he organised.

They sought to verify the authenticity of his GWR certificate due to their association with him and the lack of communication post-event.
