Police restore calm at Ejura following mob attack on police station

The Ghana Police Service has restored calm in Ejura following a mob attack on the Ejura Police Station in the early hours of Saturday, January 11, 2025.

The incident was triggered by the arrest of a suspect at around 10:00 pm on Friday, January 10, 2025, in connection with an alleged case of stealing.

In a statement, the police administration explained that the suspect was detained in custody pending further investigations.

“Later, at about 2:20 am, the suspect complained of illness and was promptly taken to the Ejura Government Hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, he passed away this morning while receiving medical treatment.

“While arrangements were being made to transport the body to the morgue for preservation and autopsy, some members of the Ejura community attacked the Police Station, set it ablaze, and a section of the mob forcibly took the body from where it was being kept,” the statement said.

The Police, through engagement with opinion leaders and de-escalation efforts, successfully restored calm in the community without any casualties. The military later joined the Police to ensure law and order were maintained.

Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service intervened to extinguish the fire at the Police Station.
