Police Arrest Suspect in Ablekuma Over Fake Foreign Currency and Firearm

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a man in the Ablekuma area of the Greater Accra Region for allegedly possessing suspected counterfeit foreign currency and an illegal firearm, as part of ongoing efforts to combat organised crime and financial fraud.
According to police sources, the arrest was made during a routine security operation aimed at identifying and apprehending individuals involved in criminal activities within the area. During a search conducted by officers, the suspect was found in possession of a quantity of foreign currency believed to be fake, along with a firearm that he was unable to legally account for.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect could be linked to activities involving counterfeit currency circulation. Police officials say such crimes pose a serious threat to economic stability and public safety, especially when combined with the illegal possession of weapons.
The suspect was immediately taken into custody to assist with investigations. Law enforcement officers have since begun further inquiries to determine the source of the counterfeit foreign currency and to establish whether the individual is part of a larger criminal network operating within or beyond the Greater Accra Region.
Police also confirmed that ballistic and forensic examinations will be conducted on the firearm to determine its origin and whether it has been used in any previous criminal activities. Investigators are working to trace the movement of the fake currency and identify possible accomplices connected to its production or distribution.
Authorities have reiterated that the illegal possession of firearms remains a major concern for national security. They stressed that individuals found in possession of weapons without the required authorization will face the full force of the law. The combination of counterfeit currency and firearms, according to police, often points to more complex criminal operations that require thorough investigation.
Residents in Ablekuma have welcomed the arrest, expressing relief over what they describe as increased police visibility and responsiveness. Some community members noted that criminal activities related to fraud and weapons have become a growing concern in parts of Accra, calling for sustained security operations to deter such acts.
The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station. Officials emphasized that intelligence from community members plays a crucial role in crime prevention and detection, particularly in cases involving financial crimes and illegal weapons.
Police further assured the public that investigations into the case are ongoing and that the suspect will be arraigned before a court once the necessary procedures are completed. Authorities have also pledged to intensify operations targeting counterfeit currency syndicates and individuals involved in the illegal arms trade.
As Ghana continues to strengthen its law enforcement frameworks, the police say collaboration between security agencies and the public remains essential in maintaining peace, protecting lives, and safeguarding the country’s financial system.
