Police arrest armed robbers, drug peddlers after series of operations in Kumasi

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested multiple suspects involved in armed robbery and drug trafficking following a series of operations in Kumasi.

On May 8, police patrol teams apprehended three suspects—Umar Issah (26), Sherif Mohammed (20), and Abdul Jalilu (19)—for allegedly robbing two residents at gunpoint in Kenyasi. The suspects, who used motorbikes, stole mobile phones but were intercepted by police.

During the pursuit, Sherif Mohammed sustained a gunshot wound, while the others were injured. All three are under police guard at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

The stolen items and motorbikes, according to the police, have been recovered as evidence.

In a separate operation on May 10, the Airport District Police arrested Adam Mohamed (29) for alleged narcotics dealing. A raid at Aboabo No. 1 uncovered 35 packs of 250mg Tramadol, 28 packs of 120mg, 11 packs of 225mg, and GH₵66,950 suspected to be drug proceeds. Mohamed is in custody as investigations continue.

In a significant breakthrough, the Police Intelligence Directorate arrested Michael Owusu Ansah, alias Baby Last, wanted since 2016 for the murder of Police Officer G/Cpl Frank Essel during a robbery at the Open Space Hotel in Denchemuoso.

Owusu Ansah confessed to multiple robberies in Denchemuoso, Atwima-Techiman, and Asuoyeboah, leading to the arrest of four accomplices: Emmanuel Owusu (Cassidy), Maxwell Gyimah (Nana Kwame), Sudais Oxford Ntiamoah (The Man Sudais), and Rhano Okyere (Demon).

A fifth suspect, Abedi, remains at large. The suspects were arraigned before the Atasomanso Circuit Court on May 13 and remanded until June 4.

Following directives from Interior Minister Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, police have also arrested 34 suspects in a crackdown on drug trafficking at Thinka Island, seizing illicit substances and cash.
