People may create fake Ghana cards – George Loh cautions
Former NDC Member of Parliament for North Dayi Constituency, George Loh, is worried the yet-to-be fully rolled out National Identification cards could be compromised with the production of fake ones.
He said when such things occur, it would be difficult for an average person to ascertain the genuine ones.
“If what we are seeing is anything to go by, then even the Ghana card, if we don’t take care it could run into a major problem because people may fake the cards… There are fake currencies that people are using in the system. Sometimes it is only at the banks that we are able to identify the fake notes,” he said on Citi TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday.
Fake Minority Ghana Card
The Minority members of have decided to boycott the NIA registration raising concerns with the cost of the project and mode of registration. They are against the decision to use only passports and birth certificates as a means of identify for those seeking to acquire the cards.
However, photos of fake NIA cards with details of some Minority MPs were circulated on social media over the weekend to suggest that they had registered for their cards despite an earlier protest.
But the NIA clarified that the cards were fake since it had not officially registered any of the Minority MPs.
CID must probe fake Ghana Card circulation – Muntaka
The Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak, said he will push for his side to petition the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), to trace persons who created the fake Ghana identity cards of some minority members.
“I will instruct that we write to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to ask them to take up this because this is completely a fake thing,” he said in a Citi News interview.
George Loh on the Breakfast Daily backed Muntaka’s call for a probe into the issue.
“They should go and report and the issue should be investigated. The first question they [Minority MPs] are asking is that where did the people get their data from? It [even] looked believable. My data is supposed to be stored somewhere. Now that data seems to be available and people have photos and they are circulating it on social media,” he said.
