Salam Mustapha, the National Youth Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has clarified his controversial statement made prior to the 2024 general elections.

He had earlier declared that he would kill himself if John Dramani Mahama, the then flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), won the elections.

Mustapha has now described the remark as mere political talk. According to him, the statement was intended to motivate and cheer up his party members ahead of the elections.

Speaking during an interview on Asempa FM on January 23, 2025, he explained that he never intended to take his own life. He further noted that if all party affiliates had actively gone out to vote, the NPP would have secured victory in the elections.

“What we did in opposition to bring the NPP back in 2016 and 2020, I was prepared to do twice as much.

“So, should I kill myself for you to attend my funeral? And would you even cry or not? That was the level of confidence I had. I wanted my party people to know that we were not down.

“Do you honestly think that if the results had been close, we would have let it go like that? If the results were close, we would have won,” he said.

Mustapha was seen addressing the party faithful at an event, expressing absolute confidence in the NPP’s chances of winning the December 7 election.

“We are not losing the election. Let nobody try to convince you that the NPP is going to lose. I am telling you if we lose this election and I keep telling people this, cut off my head. That is the level of my confidence going into that election,” he said in a viral video during the campaign period.

Meanwhile, following the close of polls on December 7, 2024, for Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary elections, the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, officially declared John Dramani Mahama the winner on Monday, December 9.

Mahama, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured a total of 6,328,397 votes, defeating Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP, who garnered 4,657,304 votes.

The NDC also achieved a historic parliamentary victory, gaining a majority in the legislature.
