Nkwanta South MCE organizes draining of abandoned underpass

In a proactive effort to enhance public health and safety, Joseph Antwi Awal, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Nkwanta South Municipality in the Oti Region, has initiated a project to drain an abandoned underpass.
This initiative aims to address the ongoing problem of stagnant water accumulating in the area.
The project responds to growing concerns about the health hazards posed by the stagnant water, which has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other pests.
The underpass, initially constructed for the safety of residents, has been neglected for years, resulting in significant waterlogging and the accumulation of debris.
Residents in the vicinity have voiced their frustration over the situation, as the stagnant water not only creates an unpleasant environment but also poses serious health risks, particularly in relation to the spread of malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the MCE mobilized a team from the Ghana National Fire Service, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, and local volunteers to clear the underpass and restore proper drainage.
In an interview with Adom News, MCE Joseph Antwi emphasized the importance of community involvement in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
He warned residents that dumping refuse and other debris into the underpass could lead to severe health implications, especially for children and the elderly.
According to Antwi, the stagnant water is not just an eyesore; it poses a significant health risk to the community. He stated that the drainage exercise aims to eliminate the current mosquito breeding site and serves as a reminder of the need for regular maintenance of public spaces.
In addition to the immediate benefits of the exercise, Joseph Antwi announced plans for a more comprehensive approach to manage sanitation in the Nkwanta South Municipality.
This plan includes regular maintenance of the sanitation system in the area and the implementation of educational programs to inform residents about the importance of keeping their surroundings clean.
The MCE urged residents to promptly report any issues related to drainage and waste management.
However, residents expressed gratitude for the MCE’s efforts, hopeful that this initiative will lead to a cleaner, healthier Nkwanta South.
They believe that the successful draining of the abandoned underpass marks a significant step towards improving public health and enhancing the quality of life for residents in the municipality.
