Nigerian Professor unbowed as Twitter removes her tweet ‘celebrating’ Queen’s death

Uju Anya, Nigerian professor of Applied linguistics

A Nigerian professor of Applied Linguistics has stoked a social media bonfire over comments she made about the health of Queen Elizabeth II.

Uju Anya’s tweet referred to the Queen as ‘the chief monarch of a thieving raping genocidal empire,’ before wishing her excruciating pain.

The tweet generated widespread support and condemnation, with supporters justifying her position that the British Empire has been a thieving one in its relations with former colonies.

Among those opposed to her view was Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest man who said he expected more from someone who is an academic.

The tweet was subsequently deleted for violating Twitter rules but she restated in a follow-up tweet that she stood by her position.

“If anyone expects me to express anything but disdain for the monarch who supervised a government that sponsored the genocide that massacred and displaced half my family and the consequences of which those alive today are still trying to overcome, you can keep wishing upon a star.”

Bezos’ comment read as follows: “This is someone supposedly working to make the world better? I don’t think so. Wow.”

The Carnegie Mellon University, where she lectures, have issued a statement affirming her right to free speech but stating that the views do not reflect that of the institution.
