NAPO-Nkrumah Saga: ‘What is political communication without comparisons?

In response to the intense criticism directed at the NPP’s running mate, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, over his remarks about Ghana’s founding father, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, NPP’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, has weighed in on the matter.

Taking to X, he defended Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh’s statements, asserting that political achievements cannot be evaluated in isolation and that comparison is essential in assessing them.

“What is political communication without comparisons? Political achievements are not measured, cannot be measured, or should not be measured in a vacuum.

“Comparison is how it is done. This government has achieved significant milestones in the history of our four republics. Stating these unprecedented milestones should not be deemed a slight on the legacies of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah or others. It’s political communication,” he stated.

He further emphasized that highlighting these milestones should not diminish the legacies of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah or others, but rather become a part of the political discourse.

He further underscored the unprecedented nature of these accomplishments, citing records from Ghana’s four republics to support his claim that no other president or head of state has achieved similar feats.

Background:

Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, made some remarks during a speech on July 8, 2024, in Kumasi, where he argued against the exceptionalism of Nkrumah’s presidency, claiming that no leader since independence has surpassed the achievements of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in advancing Ghana’s progress and security.

His comments sparked widespread criticism, including from opposition members, who highlighted the significant achievements of Kwame Nkrumah.
