The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested five people during an intelligence-led operation at the Tamale Aboabo Scrap Area over suspected drug-related and other criminal activities.
The operation was conducted on Monday, September 21, 2026, by the Regional Special Operations Team, popularly known as RED MARIA, following what police described as credible intelligence concerning activities at the location.
The suspects have been identified as Ibrahim Issahaku, 39; Mohamed John, 28; Mohamed Nawas, 25; Mohamed Osman Awal, 41; and Kwame Boateng, 28.
According to the police, two of the suspects are suspected of drug use, while another is suspected of involvement in the sale of narcotics.
Police also identified Mohamed Osman Awal as the owner of the scrap business at the location and alleged that the premises had been used to accommodate people involved in drug-related activities. These allegations have not yet been established in court.
During the operation, police said they recovered firearms, ammunition, suspected narcotics, cash and other items from different locations connected to the suspects.
A search of one suspect’s residence reportedly led to the recovery of two pistols, ammunition, suspected narcotics and cash. Police also reported recovering cash from a motorcycle belonging to another suspect, which they suspect may be connected to alleged narcotics activities.
Other exhibits reportedly seized during the operation included several packages of suspected narcotics and three motorbikes.
Following the arrests, the five suspects and the exhibits were handed over to the Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit (RDLEU) for further investigation and the necessary legal action.
The police have not indicated that the suspects have been convicted of any offence. The allegations against them remain subject to investigation and, where applicable, determination by a court.
The operation forms part of efforts by the Northern Regional Police Command to tackle suspected drug-related activities and other criminal conduct in the region.
Police said they would continue conducting intelligence-led operations aimed at disrupting illicit drug activities and addressing other security concerns.
The arrests have also drawn attention to security concerns around the Tamale Aboabo Scrap Area, where authorities say the operation was carried out based on intelligence received about suspected criminal activity.
Further developments in the case are expected as investigators examine the seized exhibits and continue questioning the suspects.
